Homework for Year 4 & 5

Homework is an important part of your child's education as it helps reinforce skills covered in class and to help prepare them for the challenges ahead. It will be set on Tuesdays and put into a homework folder that will be sent home in your child’s bookbag. Homework needs to be returned by the following Monday. Children will receive a sticker on the homework chart when they hand their homework in on time and fully completed. Any homework not completed will need to be completed during their own time during the school day. A small prize will be rewarded to those children who have completed all the homework set throughout the term, including reading regularly at home, at least 3 times, which must be recorded in their reading diaries. Each week homework will be clearly explained to the children, however in the event of any confusion, please don’t hesitate to ask me.
An important part of your child's homework is learning their weekly spellings. These will be given out every Tuesday and tested the following Monday. These are related to the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 statutory list and focus on specific spelling patterns or word families. To help support your child further with these, I have added some extra printable activities and online games to our useful website page.
Reading is vital in supporting your child with their learning at home. Please ensure your child is reading at least 3 times a week and that it is recorded in their reading diary. Don't forget this is also important when collecting reading bands. Reading helps develop a variety of other areas of the curriculum including developing vocabulary and spelling. For useful tips on hearing your child read at home and what is expected for their year group, please see the documents on our useful websites page for Year 4 and Year 5 readers. There is also a reading list of high quality reading material that you may find useful.
Multiplication & Division Facts
Multiplication & division facts should be learnt as part of your child's homework every week and play a crucial roll in their understanding of many Numeracy skills. By the end of Year 4, your child is required to know all their times table and divison facts at speed up to 12 x 12. As of 2019, the government will be testing all Year 4 children across the country on their multiplication and division fact knowledge. To support you with this, I have attached some additional resources on our useful websites page that will help you support your child with developing their skills.
To reinforce topics covered in class, your child will also be sent home a numeracy activity. All work sent home has been covered in class the previous week and completing this will help with consolidation. Note that for the first half term in Autumn, your child will be sent home with activities encouraging quick recall of times tables and division facts and consolidation of the four operations.
As the curriculum becomes more challenging for Year 5's it is important that they consolidate their comprehension and grammar & punctuation skills. Every two weeks a piece of comprehension or grammar will sent home to complete for the following week.
As you all know children learn in different ways and some forms of learning may appeal more to one child than another. Each half term a project will be set to be completed over a 4 week period (clear dates will be given on our weekly newsletter and our class page on when the project needs to be in). Your child will have a choice of projects to complete related to our current topic, they will then choose the one that appeals to them the most.
