Cormorants Week 2: 11th Jan '21
Spring 1 2021 - Luminous Light & Spectacular Sound
Week 2 (Monday 11th - Friday 15th January 2021)
At Mabe we like to be prepared for every eventuality so each week your child's learning will be uploaded in case a lockdown situation arises.
Our topic this half term is ‘Luminous Light and Spectacular Sound’ which is largely science based, with links to other areas of the curriculum. Please use the topic and science knowledge organisers to help support you with any learning during this topic. As always, there is no expectation that you complete all the activities for the week. You don't need to print the activities off, you can complete them on a separate piece paper or in a notebook if you wish.

It is important for the children to keep up with daily reading during lockdown. They are welcome to read any of their own books at home - these can be fiction, non-fiction, comics and/or magazines.
I have set up a Cormorant Class login to Oxford Owl to supplement the texts you have available at home. This will allow you to access a range of ebooks for all ages and levels. Please click on the link below and enter the username and password provided below.
English - Today we are looking at a new spelling pattern. This week's spellings all have a suffix added to them which starts with a vowel, and all the root words the suffixes are being added to have more than one syllable and the last syllable is unstressed.
Maths - Today's maths will focus on dividing 2-digit numbers by 1- digit numbers. I have attached the document as a pdf rather than Powerpoint as they work on all devices. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document.
Daily Reading - Today's daily reading task is linked to today's RE lesson. I have uploaded a video of the book we are using on to Dojo (due to copyright laws full texts can only be uploaded to a closed network, so I am unable to upload the video here). In the video you can hear me reading the text whilst following along with the pages on the screen. I have given you some questions to think about when you have watched the video - these can be found in the resources below.
For those of you who can not access the video on Dojo please use the alternative I have uploaded below.
Topic: RE - This is linked to the above reading task. You will need to have either watched the video or read the alternative text below before opening the RE lesson document.

English - Today is the first lesson of our new Talk 4 Writing unit. This half term we will be focusing on learning how to write an explanation text and will over the term produce our own explanation text about an arctic animal. This is your 'have a go' lesson where you try and write an example of a explanation so we can see what you remember from when you have looked at explanation texts before. You can write about any animal you like (you might want to choose a rainforest animal from our last topic). Don't worry if you find this tricky!
Maths - Today's maths will focus on dividing 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and will include exchanging (we have covered this in class during our addition and subtraction unit). Remember that we use the term exchange and not borrow, because we do not give them back.
I have attached the document as a pdf rather than Powerpoint as they work on all devices. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document.
Daily Reading - Reading aloud
A - Choose a book you have at home and spend 5 minutes reading it aloud to another family member, this could be reading to a younger brother or sister, reading to mum or dad or reading to another family member of the family over the phone/using video call technology.
B - Using the details at the top of the page under the Reading title to login to Oxford Owl and choose a book to read. Again where possible spend 5 minutes reading aloud to someone else.
Topic: Science - Lesson 2: This lesson builds on last week's lesson (If you have not completed last week's lesson please look through the document - no need to complete the activity, but you will need the learning for this lesson). There is an optional investigation if you have a torch and piece of card you can use - don't worry if you don't - instead have a look around the house and see what reflective materials you can spot. There is a short video clip from the BBC to accompany this lesson, the link in the document should work however her is the link just in case https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/ztcg9j6 - you can watch it before you open the main lesson if easier.

English - Today's lesson will focus on some of the vocabulary we will come across in our model text for this unit. This is similar to the vocabulary lesson we would normally have at the beginning of each unit in school.
Maths - Today's maths will continue to focus on dividing 2-digit numbers by a 1-digit number with exchange but will also involve remainders today. I have included definitions and explanations of the terms exchange and remainder to support pupils. We have done lots of work on exchanging during our addition and subtraction unit, however this will be the first time we have touched on remainders. I have attached the document as a pdf rather than Powerpoint as they work on all devices.. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document.
Daily Reading - Guided Reading: Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? by Margaret Firth.
The first chapter of this books is available on Class Dojo. (Due to copyright laws I am unable to upload any texts we use to our website.) Open the questions linked to the chapter have read below. Remember to look back at the text to help you.
If you are unable to access this text please continue with the reading you started yesterday.

English - Today we will be looking at an example of an explanation text. The document below contains the example text and some questions for you to consider.
Maths - Today's maths will focus on exploring scaling e.g there are 4 times as many red counters as blue counters. The key here is to use lots of visual aid, these can be drawn or you can use items from around the house (I am currently working on a document with suggestions of things you can use around the house to substitute the maths resources we use in school and will upload this as soon as I can). I have attached the document as a pdf rather than Powerpoint as they work on all devices. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document. Whilst we encourage the children to use rulers in school the drawing bar models, number lines or tables, please do not worry if you do not have a ruler at home, using the edge of a book or a sketched line will still give them the visual support they need with their learning.
Daily Reading - Today we are working on our summarising skills. Summarising means you try and explain what has happened in fewer words, just sharing the main events/points. Read Chapter 2 of Who was Thomas Alva Edison by Margaret Frith - this is available on Class Dojo. Activity - Try to summarise the chapter in 20 words or less. You may need to jot down some ideas or redraft to get it down to 20 words or less. Really think about what the key events/points were.
Topic: Geography - Today we are learning about climates and biomes. Use the videos on these BBC Learning pages:
Activity: Now create a poster explaining what climates and biomes are, and some of the different types of climates e.g:
- Temperate climate

English - Free Write Friday. Use the picture below in the resource section to inspire your free writing. We have done some free writing in class so the children should be familiar with the idea. They can write whatever they like e.g story, comic strip, letter, diary entry, non-fiction text etc. Sometimes we stick to a theme or use an image as inspiration. Today I would like the children to use the image provided below to inspire todays writing.
Maths - Today's maths will focus on looking at different possible combinations e.g. If I have I have attached the document as a pdf rather than Powerpoint as they work on all devices. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document.
