Cormorants Week 1: 4th Jan 21

Here is a quick guide to uploading photos of your child's home learning to their Dojo portfolio. The expectation is for at least one piece of learning to be uploaded here each day.

Spring 1 2021 - Luminous Light & Spectacular Sound

At Mabe we like to be prepared for every eventuality so each week your child's learning will be uploaded in case a lockdown situation arises.

Our topic this half term is ‘Luminous Light and Spectacular Sound’ which is largely science based, with links to other areas of the curriculum. Please use the topic and science knowledge organisers to help support you with any learning during this topic. As always, there is no expectation that you complete all the activities for the week. You don't need to print the activities off, you can complete them on a separate piece paper or in a notebook if you wish.

Week 1 - Monday 4th January  - Friday 8th January 2021

Wherever possible these activities are all designed to be done on paper/in a notebook/on screen and you should not need to print anything.

Monday 4th January 2021 - INSET DAY

 Tuesday 5th January 2021

English - During this half term we will be looking at the book 'Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? by Margaret Frith. There are some questions in the document (Tuesday 5th Jan 2021 - Who Was Thomas Alva Edison?), below for you to think about. Read the introduction pages.

Maths - Today's maths will focus on comparing statements. The children should be familiar with the > (more than) and < (less than symbols) as we have used them before. The activities are within the PowerPoint. I have also attached the document as a pdf for those of you who may struggle to access PowerPoint documents. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. There is no need to print the document.

Topic Quiz's - At the start of every topic we complete a topic quiz. At the end of the topic we return to the topic quiz and complete the end of unit section to see how much we have learnt over the course of the topic. Please have a go at both the Arctic and Light quiz's (you can just jot the question numbers and answer - a, b or c down on a piece of paper). Remember I don't expect you to know the answers at this point. Don't worry about marking the quiz - we will return to this together at the end of the topic.

Wednesday 6th January 2021

I have uploaded a couple of activities that use our spellings, however it is up to you how you want to practise your spellings (there is a full list of spellings for the term and are more suggestions for practising spellings in the documents at the top of the page).

Maths - Today's maths will focus on solving related calculations and is all about making connections. We have completed similar 'If I know 5x10=50 then I also know 10x5=50, 50 ÷5=10 and 50 ÷ 10 = 5. The activities are within the PowerPoint. I have also attached the document as a pdf for those of you who may struggle to access PowerPoint documents. The activities can be completed on paper/in a notebook. Complete  'Practise Activity 1' and 'Practise Activity 3' on paper/in your notebook.

Use this information to work out what time it would be in each capital city if it was midnight in the UK. It would be the 1st January 2021 in all the countries that are ahead of us e.g. +3hrs and 31st December 2020in all the countries behind us e.g. - 4hrs.

English - Free Write Friday. Use the picture below in the resource section to inspire your free writing. We have done some free writing in class so the children should be familiar with the idea. They can write whatever they like e.g story, letter, diary entry, non-fiction text etc. Sometimes we stick to a theme or use an image as inspiration. Today I would like the children to use the image provided below to inspire todays writing.
